News from Nidderdale……

Here’s an article that appeared recently in the Nidderdale Herald – in our new monthly update to our local paper:

As the school summer holidays fast approach, we’re looking forward to our first ‘summer reading challenge’ in our new library premises in Pateley Bridge, supporting children aged 4-11 with reading skills and confidence throughout the summer holidays. The challenge runs from 16 July to 10 September and it’s free to take part – children can sign up at the library and receive a free collector folder. Each time they read 2 books they receive a set of picture cards to encourage them to keep reading and fill in the gaps in their folder. There are other incentives too – a door hanger, a fold-out game and some dazzling rainbow glasses. When they have read six books children receive a ‘Big Friendly Read’ medal and a certificate. The only rule is that the books they read are borrowed from the library, but they can choose whatever they like, including audio-books.

We will also be hosting a themed event during the summer holidays to encourage children to take part in the challenge – on Wednesday 10 August, 10.30- 11.30 – called ‘Phizz–Whizzing Fun!’ with stories, games and crafts – book your place by ringing the Nidderdale Plus office (01423 714953).

Our meeting room is now being used by a variety of organisations and businesses, each offering information and services to local residents and visitors.

Colette Coleman will be running more pop-up travel clinics throughout the summer – drop in to see her next on Monday 25 July (1-6pm).
Andrew Gray from Truth Legal (Harrogate) is also offering free drop in services for legal advice to any local resident or business – his law firm offers specialist services in relation to personal injury, medical negligence, employment or general disputes – why not pop in on Wednesday 20 July (10am-4pm) to seek his advice?

Natalie Smith will be using our offices every first Thursday of the month (starting 7 July, 10-11am) to promote the new White Rose Credit Union, a financial cooperative regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, that, as a mutual and member organisation, has the interest of its members at heart – offering affordable lending, regular savings and banking and budgetting services at highly competitive rates. This Credit Union has been working alongside Harrogate Borough Council for some time now and has secured many council employees as members, providing a great way of regular saving and loans. Find out more about membership and benefits from Natalie or pick up some of their leaflets anytime from the Nidderdale Plus office.

We are also discussing the opportunity for the Citizens Advice Bureau to offer regular drop in sessions at our offices as well – subscribe to our website ( or follow us on Facebook or Twitter to keep up to date with this new venture.

We are keen to facilitate and provide services from the Nidderdale Plus office that are needed by our local communities – do get in touch with me – email – if you have further suggestions and ideas as we’d be delighted to hear from you. Nidderdale Plus has always aimed to ‘keep services local’ so that residents in our rural area are not disadvantaged by lack of access to advice, information and support. For this reason, our office also acts as an information point for council services (both for North Yorkshire County Council and for Harrogate Borough Council) – we’ve recently helped residents with bus pass renewals, information about domestic waste services, reporting of highways and rights of way issues and sale of garden and trade waste bags.

If you would be interested in joining our office as a volunteer (working in the library/tourist information/general office or as a driver of our community transport), do get in touch – we would always welcome new volunteers to join our team. Phone 01423 714953 and speak to Sandra or Katy for further details.

Discover Upper Nidderdale – film!

This fantastic short film has been made by Paul Harris to celebrate some of the work, so far, of the Upper Nidderdale Landscape Partnership, a 4 year Heritage Lottery funded project. Nidderdale Plus are delighted to be involved in the Landscape Partnership, in various projects and as a Steering Group member – read more about forthcoming events – at Fishpond Wood and at the 2016 NiddFest – in The Nidderdale Herald next week! We hope you enjoy the film!

Interested in your family history?

As part of Local and Community History month (May 2016), Ian Roger will be offering a free workshop session in the Nidderdale Plus community library on Monday 23 May starting at 10.30am, helping people to make the most out of library facilities for their family history projects – using on-line and other resources available through the library and other avenues. Places are limited – contact Sandra on 01423 714953 to book!

On the same day, newly-opened local business Folk Finders Family History will be doing a free drop-in day at Nidderdale Plus ‘Displaying Your Family Tree’ – they are building their new business, tracing family histories, based in the Old Workhouse, King Street, Pateley Bridge – why not pop in to see what they can offer to help you find out more about your family?

The Library service is also offering a free history quiz throughout May, testing your knowledge of our local Harrogate area – come and have a go!

Tour de Yorkshire

We hope you like this collage of some of our fantastic Nidderdale bunting, all ready to be put up to celebrate the Tour de Yorkshire! Thanks to all local schools who have designed and sewn, and the many local residents who have sewn yellow, blue and white bunting for us – it will be adorning our streets very soon!! We hope residents and visitors will enjoy the spectacle of the race on Friday 29 April – there’s extra, all day parking at the Showground; a big screen in the Recreation Ground which will show the race, live from Beverley from 12 noon to the finish at Settle about 4.30pm; the Tour de Yorkshire Caravan will stop in Pateley Bridge around 1.20pm for 10-15 minutes (sponsors’ freebies!); an Information Point at Toft Gate – and a BIG ‘Welcome to Nidderdale’ at Coldstones Cut – and have you spotted the bike at St Cuthbert’s church yet?! BBC Look North are planning to feature Pateley Bridge in their Tour preparations next week and the race will be broadcast to countries around the world. We hope that our local businesses will benefit and that all our visitors will have a lovely time in Nidderdale – and come back to visit us again soon.
