Nidderdale on the Radio!

Cuts to rural transport and bus services across the UK continue to hit the headlines and this week our Community Car project has attracted the interest of Radio 4! Presenter of ‘The World This Weekend’, Shaun Ley, visited the Nidderdale Plus office on Thursday to learn more about how the Community Car operates and to record a short conversation with Katy and Sandra – listen this Sunday at 1pm to hear more!

Nidderdale Plus – new offices!

The decorating is just about done, the carpets go down today and the ‘Fish and Chips’ sign has gone – our new offices are coming on apace!

Plans to be operating from Station Square, King Street, from week beginning 7 September are on track – library services will open there on 16 September with a new stock of books, together with computers available for public use and lots of information about local events and organisations.

We are recruiting volunteers to help us in our new premises and our thanks go to those who are already engaged with the volunteer training on offer – do get in touch with Katy or Sandra at the Nidderdale Plus office if you would like to join this merry band!

We will be hosting a ‘Community Open Event’ on Friday 18 September so mark the date in your diary and come along to see what’s on offer from this new community hub – we look forward to seeing you then!

Connecting the Dales project

The Connecting the Dales project ran from July 2011 to March 2015, coordinated by DITA, the Dales Integrated Transport Alliance. Information and images about the project and a comprehensive  final report can be found at www.dalesconnect.net.

In essence, DITA sought to bring together transport authorities, operators, transport passengers and the general public to pump prime innovative transport initiatives.

DITA helped to establish 10 Your Dales Hubs throughout this project, including one at Pateley Bridge, operated by Nidderdale Plus, providing information and advice about all local transport options, including bus timetables, cycle routes, walks and internet access for wider transport needs.

DITA also provided funding to support the purchase of the Nidderdale High School minibus, which is part of the Nidderdale Community Transport scheme, alongside the Community Car. if you have any transport questions or needs, contact the Nidderdale Plus office for assistance or to book the Community Car – tel 01423 714953.

Tour de Nidderdale!

As we look forward to the Tour de Yorkshire in May 2015, we’re delighted to be promoting our very own Tour de Nidderdale,  a ‘figure of eight’ route centred on Pateley Bridge, equally enjoyable when undertaken by bicycle, motorcycle or by car. The route can be tackled in a single ride or split into two loops. It has been designed with the experienced cyclist in mind but can be equally well enjoyed by the motorist.

The Tour guide can be downloaded here Tour de Nidderdale route and includes details of places of interest along the route, as well as an invitation to ‘spot’ the green and gold plaques that are proudly displayed in many of our villages celebrating the Tour de France in our area.

Printed copies of the Tour are also available at the Nidderdale Plus office and the Masham Community Office.

The Tour de Nidderdale was devised and prepared by a partnership arrangement between Sport Nidderdale and Nidderdale Plus and supported by Knabs Ridge Wind Farm Community Fund and Harrogate Borough Council Community Chest.

Funding advice for local charities and community groups

Did you know that Nidderdale Plus can help you to identify potential funding streams for local projects and organisations? Last year, we helped to secure a grant for the Parent Teacher and Friends Association at Nidderdale High School so that they were able to secure their purchase of a 16 seater minibus – which is now in use by students for sports fixtures and other out of school activities – and is also available to the local community who need transport assistance (and may wish to use the Nidderdale Plus volunteer drivers).

Whilst it’s often felt that ‘there’s no money out there’, there are local, District and national funds that may be available for your specific cause – that might be for sports development and improving local facilities, village hall improvements or adaptation of church buildings for community activity. Katy Penn, Partnership Manager at Nidderdale Plus has been assisting projects in the Nidderdale area in all these categories over the last few months, as organisations make plans for development opportunities.

Katy is also a member of the LEADER Advisory Board for the Yorkshire Dales area so can advise on the development of the new LEADER funding programme (2015-2020) which is likely to have the first ‘call for projects’ during the summer months of 2015.

Get in touch with Katy at the Nidderdale Plus office anytime – she will research relevant funds for you to consider and monitor any new funding opportunities that might assist your project. Ring the office on 01423 714953 or email katy@nidderdaleplus.org.

NIDDERDALE COMMUNITY OFFICE: PLANS AFOOT!

Plans for a one-stop-shop community office, managed by Nidderdale Plus, have been submitted to Harrogate Borough Council.

Following public feedback at the Nidderdale Show 2014 and discussions with partner organisations, Nidderdale Plus is applying for planning permission to transform the former Station Fisheries (King Street, Pateley Bridge) into a Community Office. Plans can be viewed at the Nidderdale Plus office at The Old Workhouse any time Monday to Friday (10-4) until 6 March.

The new Community Office will be home to library, tourist information and existing Nidderdale Plus services (including front office for local police, information and access points for county and district councils, business and local organisation support, community transport and office services such as copying and room hire).

Katy Penn, Nidderdale Plus Partnership Manager said: ‘these are exciting times for the area with these local services coming together into the one building, centrally located in Pateley Bridge. All services will be open more hours – good news for residents and visitors. It’s also an opportunity to ensure the continuity of local services that are responsive to local need. We’re grateful to NYCC Stronger Communities project for their support in this project so far.’

Pop into the Nidderdale Plus offices to see the plans, hear more about the services – and get involved!’

NIDDERDALE COMMUNITY TRANSPORT: ‘a great service!’

In partnership with North Yorks County Council, Nidderdale Plus are delighted to have taken responsibility for a new Community Car. Available to any Nidderdale resident who is without access to public or private transport, living in a rurally isolated location or needing door-to-door assistance, the Car can be pre-booked (at least 24 hours notice please) by ringing the Nidderdale Plus Office.

We have a small group of volunteer drivers who have passed a driver training course and disclosure and barring checks – they will assist with local journeys (to the doctor or dentist or local shops) or to Ripon market (Thursdays only, using the High School minibus) and to Harrogate (generally Mondays/Fridays).

All passengers pay a fare – concessions are available: prices will be advised on booking (based on mileage) – we are trying to maintain affordable fares so do ring us (01423 714953) for details.

Passengers were recently asked for their comments: ‘it’s a great service’, ‘drivers are  very good and courteous’, it’s convenient and a really helpful local service!’ – do get in touch and tell us your travel needs – we will do our best to help!

Championing Nidderdale, supporting local voluntary sector and community organisations and helping residents access local services.
