Our first anniversary at Station Square!

Our latest update to the Nidderdale Herald……picture1

How time flies (is it a sign of age?) – I am in the midst of collating information for an annual report for Nidderdale Plus – it is 1 year since we moved into our new premises at Station Square, Pateley Bridge, and 1 year since we brought together the library service, the tourist information service and our own Nidderdale Plus services under the same roof. And it’s been quite a year!

We have had nearly 20,000 visits into our offices during this period, many to join and enjoy the new library facilities; many to ask about local walks, where to eat and stay in Nidderdale and pick up details about local attractions; many to ask for information or advice about local issues that affect them or to use our printing facilities or meeting room.

All services have greatly benefitted from our ability to be open 7 days a week – and this is thanks to the help of our 30+ volunteers who work with us in the office and drive our Community Car. Our volunteers have given a staggering xxx hours of service over the past year – what a fantastic achievement, showing such support for keeping services local for the benefit of residents in the area, learning new skills, being part of a great team effort and having fun along the way! We do hope to continue recruiting new volunteers to our team – either as drivers, as trustees to our organisation or as helpers in our office and library. Do contact myself or Sandra Walker if you have time to support us (01423 714953) – our office volunteers generally each give a 3 hour stint every week whilst our drivers are contacted on an ad hoc basis to support residents requiring help with local journeys; trustees meet on a monthly basis to oversee the strategic direction of the organisation.

We have specific vacancies at the moment for trustees with financial or IT skills to offer, and for a volunteer to join our Home Library service – this is a once a month service, delivering library books to residents unable to visit the library themselves. Volunteers always undertake the visit with a colleague and it’s an opportunity to chat to people about their love of books and ensure they are getting the most out of their library membership. Do get in touch if you are interested or mention it to your friends or neighbours who may be interested in joining our volunteer team.

One of the benefits for all library members (besides books) is the opportunity to borrow DVDs, CDs and audio books – and with a Media Subscription, you can reserve your favourites free of charge and they will be delivered to the Nidderdale Plus library for you to collect at your convenience. You can browse the wide selection on offer by visiting http://www.northyorks.gov.uk/libraries and order on-line from home or by ringing our office. Media Subscriptions can be taken out for 6 months or 12 months and offer great value for money – a must for those forthcoming autumnal evenings!

We have marked our 1 year anniversary at Station Square with the launch of ‘Friends of Nidderdale Plus’, a new opportunity to show your support for the work we do and be involved in planning and developing future services and projects, as well as receiving invitations to 4 special events throughout the year. We do hope that many of you will support this new initiative – further details on our website or pop into the office and pick up a Friends leaflet!

Finally, we are hosting a Book Sale in our offices – from 2nd – 16th October, daily – so I do hope to see many of you there, choosing books from a wide selection for adults and children, fiction and non-fiction. We are open Mondays 10-6; Tuesdays to Fridays 10-4; Saturdays and Sundays 10-1 – do pop in anytime!

Tour de Yorkshire!

TDY 2016

Thanks to Welcome to Yorkshire for a great roadshow last night! Nidderdale on the Radio!

Cuts to rural transport and bus services across the UK continue to hit the headlines and this week our Community Car project has attracted the interest of Radio 4! Presenter of ‘The World This Weekend’, Shaun Ley, visited the Nidderdale Plus office on Thursday to learn more about how the Community Car operates and to record a short conversation with Katy and Sandra – listen this Sunday at 1pm to hear more!

Opportunities for volunteering!

Plans for the new Community Hub in Pateley Bridge are well underway and Nidderdale Plus is now seeking volunteers to assist with welcoming visitors to the Hub, giving advice and information where required and assisting with activities in the library area.

We would welcome volunteers from all aspects of our local community to help us in the Hub – we have use of the Community Car if you are rurally isolated and need assistance with transport; we will provide full training and we are planning to have at least 2 volunteers working at any one time (alongside Nidderdale Plus and/or library staff), so that you are part of a team.

Download an application form here:

or call into the office anytime to pick up a form.

Building alterations are planned for the former Station Fisheries in King Street, Pateley Bridge – these will ensure the Hub is accessible for all with an external ramp and disabled toilet/baby changing facilities inside – and services hope to open there from early September 2015.

Get in touch if you are interested in knowing more about these volunteering opportunities – let us know if you have a particular interest or skill that you would like to offer or if you are just interested in finding out more. Contact Katy Penn at Nidderdale Plus – by phone (01423 714953) or by email (katy@nidderdaleplus.org) – we look forward to hearing from you!

Community Car, serving residents of Nidderdale!

This service is managed by Nidderdale Plus and is available for any local resident who is unable to access public transport (often due to rural isolation) or who needs door-to-door assistance due to mobility or disability issues.

Journeys may be for such things as doctor or dentist appointments, shopping locally, for accessing other services or for joining social activities (coffee mornings etc).

Our drivers are volunteers who undertake driver training (MIDAS) and DBS checks.

To book the Community Car, ring Nidderdale Plus (01423 714953) and tell us when and where you want to travel. We will then try to obtain a volunteer driver for you and will advise you of the fare (based on mileage of your journey) – our fares are based on 45p per mile but we also operate a concessionary rate for those of bus pass age or in receipt of benefits. Call us and we can discuss details, according to your particular needs.

Volunteer drivers: if you would like to join our team of drivers, please contact Katy Penn at Nidderdale Plus – training will be provided and even small amounts of time offered can be of great assistance to the service.

Contact Katy Penn at Nidderdale Plus between 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday – 01423 714953 or email katy@nidderdaleplus.org

Connecting the Dales project

The Connecting the Dales project ran from July 2011 to March 2015, coordinated by DITA, the Dales Integrated Transport Alliance. Information and images about the project and a comprehensive  final report can be found at www.dalesconnect.net.

In essence, DITA sought to bring together transport authorities, operators, transport passengers and the general public to pump prime innovative transport initiatives.

DITA helped to establish 10 Your Dales Hubs throughout this project, including one at Pateley Bridge, operated by Nidderdale Plus, providing information and advice about all local transport options, including bus timetables, cycle routes, walks and internet access for wider transport needs.

DITA also provided funding to support the purchase of the Nidderdale High School minibus, which is part of the Nidderdale Community Transport scheme, alongside the Community Car. if you have any transport questions or needs, contact the Nidderdale Plus office for assistance or to book the Community Car – tel 01423 714953.
